Telegram without a phone number: what is possible

Telegram needs a number to create an account, but that does not mean your own number has to be the one everyone sees.

Key points

  • Telegram verifies every new account by SMS or an in-app code, so you cannot create an account with no number at all.
  • You can register with your own SIM and hide the number in settings.
  • If the account is long-lived, use a permanent number.
  • A virtual number does not make you anonymous to Telegram itself, and it does not replace good account security.

What Telegram actually requires

Telegram verifies every new account by SMS or an in-app code, so you cannot create an account with no number at all. What you can control is which number that is, and who can see it.

In privacy settings you can hide your number from everyone and use a public username instead, so contacts find you by handle rather than by phone number.

Your realistic options

You can register with your own SIM and hide the number in settings. You can use a number from Telegram's own anonymous number marketplace, which is separate from mobile carriers. Or you can register with a virtual number that receives the verification SMS.

Each option has trade-offs. Your own SIM ties the account to you. Anonymous marketplace numbers depend on a separate wallet and platform. A virtual number keeps the account separate from your personal line.

When a virtual number makes sense

If the account is long-lived, use a permanent number. Telegram can ask for a fresh code when you sign in on a new device, so a number that is still yours months later keeps you from being locked out. An OTP number suits only an account you will never sign into again.

A VNumbr permanent line is allocated on a real mobile network and stays assigned to you while you renew, with the SMS arriving in a private dashboard inbox.

What a number does not do

A virtual number does not make you anonymous to Telegram itself, and it does not replace good account security. Turn on two-step verification and keep a recovery route you control.

Telegram decides which numbers it accepts and can limit new registrations, so treat any provider claim of guaranteed acceptance with caution.

Step by step: registering with a virtual number

Buy a permanent number, open Telegram, enter the number with its country code and request the code. Copy the code from your VNumbr inbox into Telegram and finish creating the profile.

Then open Settings, Privacy and Security, and set who can see your phone number to nobody. Turn on two-step verification with a password only you know.

Common mistakes

Using a throwaway number for an account you plan to keep is the most common mistake. When Telegram asks for a code on a new device, the code goes to whoever holds that number now.

Another is skipping two-step verification. A code sent by SMS is one factor, and a password adds a second that a stolen number alone cannot bypass.

Common questions

Can I sign up for Telegram with no number?

No. Telegram requires a number to verify a new account, though you can hide it from other users afterward.

Will people see my number?

Only if your privacy settings allow it. You can hide it and use a username instead.

Permanent or OTP number for Telegram?

Permanent if you will sign in again on other devices. OTP only for a throwaway account.

What if the number lapses?

You could lose access to codes, so update the number in Telegram before letting a line expire.

Are VNumbr numbers real mobile numbers?

Yes. They are allocated on real mobile carrier networks rather than internet-based VoIP pools. Each app decides for itself which numbers it accepts, so no provider can guarantee a specific result.

How do I pay, and do I need ID?

Pay with cryptocurrency through Cryptomus or NOWPayments, or from a wallet balance. Signup needs only an email address and no identity documents.

What is the difference between a permanent number and an OTP number?

A permanent number is billed monthly or yearly and stays assigned to you for as long as you renew it. An OTP number is billed per activation and receives a single code before it is released.

Only need one code, not a number to keep?

This guide is about VNumbr's permanent numbers. For a single sign-up instead, VNumbr also sells OTP numbers billed per activation.
