What SMS verification costs: OTP vs permanent

Per-code pricing looks cheap until you need many codes. Here is how to compare it with a flat plan.

Key points

  • A per-activation OTP number costs a small amount each time you need a code.
  • Divide the monthly price of a permanent number by the per-code price of an OTP number.
  • An OTP number cannot be reused, so an account that later asks for another code means buying again, and the account may be unrecoverable if the code goes elsewhere.
  • One-off registration you will never revisit: OTP.

Two pricing models

A per-activation OTP number costs a small amount each time you need a code. A permanent number costs a flat monthly or yearly price and receives unlimited SMS while you renew.

Which is cheaper depends on how many codes you need and how long the account lives.

How to find your break-even

Divide the monthly price of a permanent number by the per-code price of an OTP number. If you need more codes than that per month for the same account, the flat plan costs less. If you need fewer, per-code wins.

Prices differ by country and service, so use the live numbers rather than a rule of thumb. Our calculator does the arithmetic with current catalog prices.

Costs that are easy to miss

An OTP number cannot be reused, so an account that later asks for another code means buying again, and the account may be unrecoverable if the code goes elsewhere. A permanent number costs more upfront but avoids that risk.

Also consider crypto network fees, and whether refunds apply if a code never arrives.

Rule of thumb

One-off registration you will never revisit: OTP. Anything with two-factor authentication, recovery or repeat sign-ins: permanent. Use the calculator to confirm for your numbers.

Worked example

Suppose an OTP number costs a few cents per code and a permanent number costs a few dollars a month. If you expect fewer codes than the monthly price divided by the per-code price, OTP is cheaper; above that, the flat plan wins.

Real prices vary, so plug your own figures into the calculator rather than relying on this example.

Cost of getting it wrong

The cheapest option can be the most expensive if the account is lost. Recovering a locked account can take days and sometimes fails, which is why cost should be weighed together with how important the account is.

Common questions

Is per-code always cheaper?

For a single code, usually. For repeated codes on one account, a flat plan often wins.

Does VNumbr charge per message?

No. Permanent plans are flat, OTP numbers are per activation.

Are prices the same everywhere?

No, they vary by country and service. Check live prices.

Are OTP purchases refundable?

Yes if cancelled before an SMS arrives. See the refund policy.

Are VNumbr numbers real mobile numbers?

Yes. They are allocated on real mobile carrier networks rather than internet-based VoIP pools. Each app decides for itself which numbers it accepts, so no provider can guarantee a specific result.

How do I pay, and do I need ID?

Pay with cryptocurrency through Cryptomus or NOWPayments, or from a wallet balance. Signup needs only an email address and no identity documents.

What is the difference between a permanent number and an OTP number?

A permanent number is billed monthly or yearly and stays assigned to you for as long as you renew it. An OTP number is billed per activation and receives a single code before it is released.

Only need one code, not a number to keep?

This guide is about VNumbr's permanent numbers. For a single sign-up instead, VNumbr also sells OTP numbers billed per activation.

Get a number you keep

Pick a country, pay in crypto or from your balance, and receive SMS on a permanent line.
